has delivered the first 'one piece' hydrogen face seals to a blue
chip OEM in the power generation industry. The seals are used on 550MW
hydrogen cooled generators. The seals have been manufactured from
one solid billet, as opposed to a welded fabrication. The new process
is possible only with the investment made in a vertical 5 axis lathe,
specified by Mazak specifically to manufacture hydrogen seals.
Without
welded fabrications the seals are a now a much more stable product
allowing for accurate re-building of the seals whilst maintaining
flatness of the sealing face which is critical to their application.
The new manufacturing process is much faster
than making the fabrications and the additional benefits of the
product stability allows finish machining of the taper land sealing
face to be done with no additional work required.
